Andrew’s Actions | A Movement Based On Love

Daily Action(s)

On Sunday afternoon we had a great general meeting for Santa Cruz Indivisible. Although Indivisible started as a way to #resist the worst of Trump’s agenda, it has grown to be so much more than that. We elect progressive candidates. We pass legislation that protects voting rights, reduces pollution, expands health care, increases gun safety, and so much more. We volunteer in our communities. We are a movement based on love. We don’t and won’t demonize or demean. The love in the room on Sunday was palpable and the plans for this year and next were truly exciting.

That same love was in the Civic Auditorium Monday night for UCSC’s 35th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation. The keynote speaker, Melissa Harris-Perry, gave a great speech that highlighted the importance of love, forgiveness, understanding, and growth. One of the many things that struck me was when she noted how many emails with outraged subject lines she receives (Can you believe what Mitch McConnell just did?) I realized that I fall into that same trap at times. It’s natural to be outraged by the many travesties occurring in politics these days. But we don’t need to rely on anger. We can use love. Love for each other. Love for ourselves. Love for the environment. Love for future generations. Love for marginalized groups.

We’re going to need a lot of love and effort to combat climate change in any semblance of a successful manner. Today at 4:00 pm, Santa Cruz Indivisible, the Romero Institute’s Greenpower Project, and the Sunrise’s Movement’s Santa Cruz hub will visit Rep. Panetta’s office at 701 Ocean St., Room 318C to express gratitude for his agreeing to cosponsor the Green New Deal and build support for the bill. If you can’t make it in person, please call!

You can find your state representative and links to contact information: (Also, one of the benefits of lobbying state representatives is that they have closer offices than senators so you can go in and speak to their staff and convey how important issues are to them)

Recent News and Upcoming Events

The Senate may have actually done a good thing. Yesterday, the Senate passed a bipartisan land conservation bill, 92-8, that is the largest public lands bill in a decade.

And good news coming out of LA: Under the leadership of Mayor Eric Garcetti, LADWP will change plans to rebuild 3 gas-fired power plants and instead will use the capital that would have been spent on fossil fuel infrastructure to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

For New Members

New members, welcome!

When making calls, be sure to identify yourself with your address so you get marked down correctly and please mention Santa Cruz Indivisible so our influence grows.
Please invite friends and family to join. We want to build the largest group possible to ensure that our voices are heard and our officials represent us.

For those of you who haven’t read the Indivisible Guide, please read it: It has a lot of good, important information in it. Also, there’s been some activity/suggestions that contradict it and although we may deviate from it in some ways, we’re going to try to focus our efforts (at least initially) on the things it suggests, which are mostly about our representatives and focusing on visits, calls, and letters rather than emails/petitions. Thanks.

There have been a number of questions about petitions and emails to national politicians. If possible, please focus (per the Indivisible Guide) on our representatives and providing local pressure. Our priority list of actions is (1) in-person, (2) live phone call, (3) voicemail, (4) letter, (5) email, (6) petition.

Andrew’s Actions is a part of Santa Cruz Indivisible and was formerly known as Indivisible Santa Cruz before the groups merged.

Here’s a great project from member Emily Coren: Ever have too much kids art? Not sure what to do with it? Send it to Congress! Come participate in positive civic engagement through art. It’s simple! We are decorating postcards with art and mailing them to our representatives. If you want to learn new art skills, make new friends and teach our kids how to constructively participate in civics then come join us. To learn more about the project go to:
