I hope this communication finds you well.
The Indivisible Guide turned one this past week, and as it happens, the founders of Indivisible, Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin, came to meet with myself and a few others in Santa Cruz. It was great to celebrate the first birthday with Ezra and Leah; both are very sharp, articulate, and knowledgeable about what they are doing. I felt very good about their leadership and their approach in recognizing that Indivisible is a grassroots based movement and they are here to support us; not dictate from the top down. Alan Hicks, the Indivisible South County leader, mentioned that these two are true changers of history, and it was great to be in the presence of two people accomplishing something historic.
It also got me thinking about what we have done since this wild ride started:
-Several initial organizing meetings with close to 1,000 people in attendance
-A Resistance Open House with 750+ attendees
-Participation in the Eshoo/Panetta Town Hall with 500 SCI members in attendance
-The Resist Fest consisting of 15+ SCI issue teams and 50+ artists from ARRT
-Tremendous number of workshops, actions, research, postcards, phone calls, and more from close to 3,500 affiliated members of the organization.
-All while building a startup grassroots political machine for the long-term engagement of a progressive platform with 100% volunteer labor.
Multiple Organized Rallies and Marches:
-Rally at Seacliff Inn to protest Devin Nunes
-March and Rally for the Release of Trump’s Tax Return
-March for Science
-March for the Earth
Needless to say, it has been a tremendous adventure and undertaking.
That being said, we have a lot to do, because the Republican party leadership (supporters now of pedophilia in their Senatorial candidates) continues to drive toward new lows as they cling desperately power; this isn’t just about Trump, it includes many other people in the leadership of the Republican Party. They are not interested in decency or principal above political power. They have clearly demonstrated that they will toss any and all ideas on the fire in order to keep their particular brand of political power.
What is clear to me now is that this fight is going to go on for a while. We must win the hearts and minds of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans with reasonable, decent, progressive values around which people can find common ground. We must take back the 1,000 state held seats, governorships, Federal level congressional seats and the Presidency. The Republican Party that is currently in power is atrocious, and if left unchecked, will continue the tremendous damage they have been doing for these past 30+ years. We MUST KEEP FIGHTING.
To this end, Santa Cruz Indivisible is going on a “war-footing” to support progressive candidates for 2018. We will be hosting a planning meeting in early January to coordinate our resources within SCI as well as other Indivisibles and 3rd party groups like Swing Left, Sister District and more. Look for an email with the details of our strategies.
Additionally, we have many great actions and events scheduled for 2018 :
-Co-sponsoring the The Women’s March
-Supporting the MLK March
-California Leadership Series
-Citizenship 2.0 kick off and more. If you are interested in participating in the planning of Citizenship 2.0, please let me know, by emailing me

At the end of November, we conducted our first freeway overpass action. The event was extremely successful. Fred Seamon, of the International Relations & Russia Issue team, counted well over 350 supportive ‘honks’ from cars, big rigs, emergency vehicles and more. Some blamed us for the traffic on Highway 1 (for real). Other than that, I received a fair amount of positive feedback about our visibility. The teams that were out on the bridges did a fantastic job! Thank you to all of them!
We are looking to create a “Bridge Brigade.” Three individual groups of people that are willing to be our team when we are going to conduct overpass actions. There will be many more in 2018, and help is needed in the management and execution of these actions. Please contact me if you are interested in participating: email@example.com, please write “bridge brigade“ in the subject line.
If you’ve read this far, then you are committed to the actions and political involvement SCI represents. Our Republic and the ideals for which it stands do not come for free. People have given their lives for this country we live in. Great suffering has been experienced by many, many thousands of people in order for you to have the privilege of reading this letter I have had the privilege to write. We must protect these privileges, I know it sounds like a long shot, but it is true.
This is where we ask you for financial support. Please donate. Please donate $20 monthly so we can make this happen. $240 a year can go a long long way.
In peace & solidarity,
Carson D. Kelly
